Hosta – Sum and Substance

Hosta, plantain lily

An extremely popular and care-free shade perennial, hostas are low-growing, clump forming mounds of beautiful heart shaped leaves varying from pale yellow to deep waxy green to powdery blue-green, with endless styles of variegation. Small, lily-like white or lavender flowers are held aloft on strong scapes, but the foliage is the main attraction. All parts are edible.

One of the largest hostas, ‘Sum and Substance’ forms a spreading mound of thick, light green to chartreuse leaves each up to 20″ long. With a waxy coating on the leave, Sum and Substance is known as one of the most slug-resistant hostas you can find.
